PHOTOGRAPHY EXPEDITION

Arrive Cotonou, settle into accommodation. Evening: photography briefing session with your guide — site-by-site rundown of what access is confirmed, photography protocols for each ceremony and community, a technical rundown of lighting conditions you’ll encounter, and equipment discussion. This evening sets up every subsequent day.

Departure for Dantokpa Market — the largest market in West Africa at its atmospheric pre-dawn peak. Fishing boats returning on the lagoon, markets setting up, light going from blue to orange in 20 minutes. Afternoon: Cotonou lagoon and beach. Evening: review and cull session at accommodation.

Transfer to Ouidah. Morning: Route des Esclaves with VBR heritage guide — the memorial sculptures, the sacred trees, the community ceremonies that occur along the route. Sunset at La Porte du Non-Retour — the monument faces the sea, and with a clear October-March horizon the light is extraordinary. Community ceremony photography (if timing aligns) arranged by VBR.

Transfer to Abomey. Morning: Royal Palaces of Abomey (UNESCO) — the bas-relief panels, royal regalia, and architectural spaces of the Dahomean kingdom. Afternoon: traditional brass-casting and appliqué-textile workshops — artisans at work in the pre-colonial craft tradition that has sustained Abomey for 400 years. Stay overnight in Abomey.

Transfer to Porto-Novo. Morning: the Afro-Brazilian quarter with Gérard — guided architectural photography of the colonial facades, tiled mansions, and hybrid-style Grande Mosquée. Afternoon: Palais Royal Honmè. If the ceremonial calendar permits (confirmed 2 weeks before travel), Egungun ceremony photography access arranged by Gérard. Evening on the Porto-Novo lagoon.

Long drive north to the Atacora region (8hrs via VBR vehicle, with stops). Arrive Boukoumbé by late afternoon. Transfer immediately to Tata Somba villages for golden-hour photography — the two-storey earthen fortress-houses in the low light of the Atacora hills, with farming families returning from fields, cattle being brought in, fires being lit. The most architecturally extraordinary golden-hour subject in West Africa.

Departure for Pendjari National Park gate (50km). Dawn game drive with African Parks ranger — lions in the long grass, elephants moving to water, hippos in the river, the extraordinary birdlist materialising in the morning light. Second game drive at dusk. Photography from the vehicle and designated walking positions with ranger.

Morning: Tanougou Falls (12km from Natitingou) — a waterfall into a mountain pool, extraordinary in dry season light. Begin return journey to Cotonou. Evening in Cotonou: group photography review session over dinner — sharing best frames, discussing the experience, exchanging contacts. Transfer to COO airport for evening departures.
