Natitingou “Nati” to locals is the capital of Benin’s Atakora Region and the essential gateway to both Pendjari National Park and the remarkable Tata Somba cultural landscape. Set in the mountainous northwest at 438 metres, it has a cooler climate than the coast and a completely different cultural flavour this is Otamari and Berba country, peoples whose extraordinary tradition of building Tata Somba fortified tower-houses has survived for centuries.
The Tata Somba houses two-storey earthen structures with granary towers, livestock on the ground floor, and living quarters above are the architectural highlight of northern Benin and among the most photogenic vernacular structures in all of Africa.
Traditional earthen tower-houses of the Otamari people; unchanged for centuries and still inhabited
Benin’s only significant highland; cool temperatures, sweeping views, and hiking trails
Strong ethnographic collection covering the Otamari, Berba, Gourmantché, and Somba peoples
Beautiful cascade near Boukombé village, spectacular after the rains in September–October
Natitingou is the primary hub for Pendjari safaris; most guides and tour operators base here
