Ouidah is the spiritual heartbeat of Benin and the global birthplace of voodoo a word that comes from the Fon language of this very city, meaning “spirit” or “deity.” For centuries it was also one of the largest slave-trading ports in the Atlantic world; an estimated one million enslaved Africans walked the Route des Esclaves (Slave Route) from the city’s markets to the ocean, through the Door of No Return, never to see home again. Today, both histories coexist in a city of extraordinary emotional power.
The Temple of the Pythons, where sacred pythons live freely, the Python Forest, the Fondation Zinsou Ouidah gallery, and the Basilique de l’Immaculée Conception (a Portuguese-era cathedral) make this one of the most layered cities in all of Africa.
