Royal Palaces of Dahomey

ABOMEY, ZOU DEPARTMENT

Abomey — The Kingdom That Never Bowed

The ancient city of Abomey was the capital of the Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful pre-colonial African empires, whose warrior culture, craftsmanship, and political structures rivalled the great powers of 18th-century Europe. Today, its Royal Palaces are a UNESCO World Heritage Site: a sprawling complex of clay bas-reliefs, royal thrones, and ceremonial halls speaking to six centuries of unbroken kingship. This is not a ruin, it is a living royal heritage, and one of Africa’s most profound historical experiences.
