Pendjari National Park is the finest wildlife destination in West Africa and one of the continent’s most underrated safari experiences. Covering 2,755 km² of West Sudanian savanna, gallery forest, and rocky hills along the Burkina Faso border, Pendjari harbours lions, African bush elephants, hippopotami, African buffalo, West African painted dogs (critically endangered), leopards, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, and over 470 bird species.
Because Benin has historically attracted far fewer international visitors than East or Southern African safari destinations, Pendjari remains genuinely wild and uncrowded — game drive encounters feel like true wilderness discoveries rather than managed wildlife shows. African Parks has been managing Pendjari since 2017, dramatically improving infrastructure, anti-poaching, and animal populations.
