This 7-day itinerary is Benin at its most dynamic — combining the cultural and spiritual riches of the south with the raw wilderness of the north. You’ll start in Cotonou, explore Ouidah and Porto-Novo, then make the stunning 500km drive north through Dassa-Zoumé’s sacred hills to Natitingou and into Pendjari National Park — home to one of the last wild populations of West African lions.
This is a physically active tour — long drives, early mornings, and outdoor conditions in the north. Your reward is extraordinary: a Benin almost no tourists reach.
Pendjari Wildlife: Pendjari supports the highest density of large mammals in West Africa. Lions, African elephants, buffalo, hippopotamus, kob antelope, warthog, crocodile, and over 300 bird species. Sightings are never guaranteed, but dry season (Nov–Apr) offers excellent visibility at waterholes.
Accommodation (North): The Pendjari lodges are rustic-comfortable — clean rooms, communal dining, generators. Not five-star, but the experience is extraordinary.
Road Conditions: Some northern roads are unpaved. Your guide uses a 4WD vehicle and knows the routes intimately. Allow extra time and embrace the journey.

3 Hours Before Flight Time
Airport arrival, hotel check-in in Haie Vive. Evening orientation dinner with your guide — a detailed briefing on the week ahead, local customs to know, and a taste of Beninese street food.
Full day in Ouidah: Route des Esclaves, Door of No Return, Python Temple, Sacred Forest, and the Museum of History. If timing aligns, witness the evening Zangbeto masked spirit ceremony.
Morning in Porto-Novo — Royal Palace and the Afro-Brazilian Museum. Afternoon: drive to Abomey-Calavi jetty. Sunset pirogue into Ganvié, staying at the floating guest lodge if available (optional upgrade).
Depart early for the 450km drive north. Stop at Dassa-Zoumé’s 41 sacred hills — a pilgrimage site attracting 40,000+ visitors annually. Continue to Parakou for overnight. Evening at a local bar with Tchoukoutou (traditional sorghum beer).
Natitingou Atacora Museum. Drive into the hills to visit traditional Betamaribe villages with their remarkable castle-fortresses (tata-somba), declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Overnight at Natitingou’s best lodge.
Enter Pendjari National Park at dawn with your ranger. Morning game drive (4–5 hours) targeting lions, elephants, hippos, and leopards at the watering holes. Afternoon rest at the lodge. Dusk game drive — the park’s golden hour. Night sounds and star-gazing.
Pre-dawn final game drive. Breakfast in the bush. Drive back south — or take the domestic flight from Natitingou to Cotonou (supplement applies). Transfer to COO Airport.
“Long drives but absolutely worth it. The tata-somba villages were mind-blowing — that architecture is unlike anything on earth. Guide was outstanding throughout.”
Hamburg, Germany — January 2026
“The drive north through Dassa was unexpectedly stunning. Those sacred hills at sunset were more beautiful than anything I expected. The whole tour was full of surprises.”
Amsterdam, Netherlands — March 2025
“We saw lions on Day 6 — three of them resting under an acacia tree at sunrise. I’ve been on safari in Kenya and Tanzania. Pendjari felt more raw, more real. No tourist buses, just us and the animals.”
