Morning: Dantokpa Market with your guide — West Africa’s largest open-air market, an overwhelming introduction to Cotonou’s commercial and social energy. Afternoon: Fondation Zinsou — West Africa’s leading contemporary art museum, a cool and beautiful counterpoint to the morning. Evening: lagoon waterfront at sunset.

Early morning to Ouidah — Route des Esclaves, Temple du Serpent (sacred python temple), and the Door of No Return at the beach. Return via Ganvié: board a pirogue on Lake Nokoué for an hour on the water-village — 30,000 people living on stilts in the middle of a lake, the most unlikely and extraordinary community in West Africa.

Transfer to Abomey (80km). Full day at the UNESCO World Heritage Royal Palaces — bas-relief panels depicting the military campaigns of the Dahomey kings, royal thrones, ceremonial objects, and the story of one of the most formidable African kingdoms of the 18th and 19th centuries. Overnight in Abomey.

Transfer to Porto-Novo (110km east). Morning: Musée Ethnographique and guided walk through the Afro-Brazilian quarter with Gérard — the tiled facades, the hybrid mosque, the story of the returnees from Brazil who built this city’s most extraordinary architecture. Afternoon: Palais Royal and Marché Ouando.

West to Grand-Popo — the most beautiful section of the Beninese Atlantic coast. Morning watching traditional fishermen bring in their nets at dawn. Afternoon free: swimming, reading, the exceptional Grand-Popo beach with no tourists for miles. Optional pirogue trip up the Mono river through mangrove forest at sunset.

Morning return to Cotonou (115km). Check-in to departure hotel or airport transfer. VBR arranges a farewell dinner for the group at a Cotonou restaurant in the evening — optional but almost always attended. Transfer to COO airport for overnight or early-morning departures.
