Hydrokèkè Lagoon Kayak & Canoe

Hydrokèkè (literally “the water bicycle” in Fon) is Cotonou’s beloved lagoon recreation site — a unique eco-leisure destination on the northern banks of the Cotonou lagoon where visitors can explore the city’s extraordinary freshwater and brackish water ecosystems by pedal-boat, kayak, or traditional pirogue. Unlike the Ganvié tour which focuses on cultural immersion, Hydrokèkè is primarily a nature and recreation experience.

The lagoon here is home to a rich aquatic ecosystem — birds, juvenile fish, mangrove vegetation, and the constant drama of the city’s fisher families working their nets at the water’s edge. A naturalist guide accompanies all tours, identifying bird species (over 80 species recorded in this lagoon section), explaining the mangrove ecosystem’s ecological importance, and pointing out the fishing techniques that have sustained Cotonou’s communities for centuries.
