The ancestors walk. Elaborately costumed Egungun spirits from the Yoruba tradition return to the living — to bless, correct, and remember. Porto-Novo and Kétou, during the April–June ceremony season. Maximum 6 participants.

The Egungun masquerade is the central ancestral tradition of the Yoruba people — an elaborate ceremony in which the spirits of ancestors return, clothed in voluminous cascading fabric, to interact with the living community. It is not a performance. It is a genuine spiritual event that has been continuous in Porto-Novo and Kétou for centuries — and whose traditions were carried to Brazil (where they became the Egúngún of Candomblé), to Cuba, and to Haiti.

This 4-day deep dive gives you the closest access available to a non-initiated visitor. Rosalie Linhoun and Gérard Bossou have established community relationships in both Porto-Novo and Kétou that allow respectful attendance at ceremonies, introduction to masquerade lineage holders, and access to the museum collections that document the tradition’s history. Maximum 6 participants. This is not a tour you take; it is a relationship you enter.

Day by Day

Day 1Porto-Novo Arrival — Museum & Cultural Orientation

Arrive Porto-Novo and settle into accommodation. Afternoon: Musée Ethnographique de Porto-Novo — the finest collection of Egungun masquerade costumes in any public institution in West Africa. Gérard provides a 2-hour guided tour connecting each costume to the lineage it represents and the ceremonies it performs. Evening: cultural briefing on Egungun protocol — what you may and may not do, where you may and may not stand, what photography is and is not permitted.

Day 2Porto-Novo Ceremony Access

With advance community permission arranged by Gérard, attend a community Egungun ceremony in the Porto-Novo old quarter — your position organised to allow respectful observation without intrusion. The ceremony itself: drumming, the emergence of the masquerade, its circuit of the community compound, its interactions with specific individuals, and eventually its return. A debrief session with Gérard follows.

Day 3Kétou — Source City of the Diaspora Tradition

Travel to Kétou (3hrs from Porto-Novo). This is the city from which the Egungun tradition was carried to Brazil — where it became the Egúngún ceremonies of Candomblé Kétu. Rosalie introduces the group to an Egungun lineage holder in Kétou for a conversation (translated) about the tradition’s continuity and its diaspora connections. Sacred grove walk. Evening: visit to the Kétou royal palace compound.

Day 4Final Ceremony & Depart

Morning: optional attendance at a Porto-Novo morning ceremony (if timing aligns with the ceremonial calendar — Rosalie confirms in advance). Reflection session with the group — processing what has been witnessed. Depart for Cotonou by midday. Transfer to COO airport or Cotonou hotel for onward travel.
